Turaki from the tribal lands of the Whanganui river (Te Wainui a Rua or Te Awanui a Rua the original name of the river) spreading to the outer reaches of the world. This whakatauki says that Turaki School who is connected to Te Wainui –a- rua is expanding and spreading to the very ends of the world, or Turaki from the rural tribal lands of Te Wainui-a-rua spreading to the outer reaches of the world. Te Wainui a Rua or Te Awanui a Rua (The great waters Rua or the great river of Rua) references our connection to the original occupants of the river prior to the great migration of waka from Hawaiki. Ruatipua (Rua) being one of our ancestors and original inhabitants of the river prior to that migration descending down 13 generations to Paerangi i te wharetoka continuing another 11 generations to Hekeawai of Ngati Haua and Ngati Hauaroa decent and to this area.
Turaki Maikuku donated the land that the school sits on for the purposes of education so that our young people would receive an education and further themselves. She lived at Puru ki Tuhua which was a papakainga located near Victory bridge up until the 1920s the domain grounds were huge gardens belonging to Ngati Hauaroa and Ngati Hekeawai whanau.

Turaki School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) school. The Turaki School values are represented by the AROHA acronym. By showing AROHA and demonstrating these values, children are actively living the Key Competencies and promoting the character and learning qualities desired by our school and community. AROHA forms the basis of the learner we aim to grow at Turaki School.
