At Turaki School we pride ourselves on building and maintaining positive working relationships with our tamariki and their whanau to provide high-quality learning experiences in a caring environment.  Our tamariki thrive in the settled and inclusive environment we provide.  We work collaboratively with our long-standing Board of Trustees and our PTA.

Our passionate teachers encourage our tamariki to develop their potential in all areas of the curriculum. We are a collaborative teaching and learning team which is made up of three teams: Te Kākako (Years 1-3), Te Pihinga (Years 4-6) and Te Māhuri (Years 7-8).

Te Kākano - A seed
A student that is learning to be independent and beginning to manage themselves without adult support.  A student who is developing their awareness of school routines.  A student who is developing socially, emotionally and physically.  A student who is building a strong foundation to improve their cognitive capabilities. A student who is learning to relate to others and needs consistent nourishment to build to the next level of learning and understanding of the world that surrounds them.

Te Pihinga - A sapling or seedling

A student who is climbing their way upwards. Who has well developed social, physical and emotional needs and is building their cognitive skills and developing into the world and their environment as a kind and fair citizen. A student who is beginning to think critically about the world around them and their peers.  A student who is making connections to their environment and needs continuous nourishment to grow and adapt to the conditions.

Te Māhuri - A young maturing tree

A student who has advanced social, emotional, cognitive and physical skills.  A student who has advanced ideas of the extended world and their immediate environment. A student who is ready to change the world around them who has a sense of their community and leads change for others who follow in their footsteps. A student who will direct learning and reflect on how far they have come.  A student who grows more independently everyday by managing themselves. A student who is proud of their identity and culture by participating and contributing to all learning areas.

In Te Kākano our tamariki are supported by learning through play which we believe is an important start to their learning journey at Turaki School.  In Te Pihinga and Te Māhuri our tamariki are digital learners who plan their day around assigned Literacy and Numeracy workshops.  We also have wonderful teacher aides who support teaching and learning programmes for our students during the school day.

We are a PB4L school and our values of AROHA

(Achievement, Respect, Ownership, Honesty, Attitude) combine to make our ‘Turaki Way’.

 

​

We have Breakfast in Schools available to all students before school in our school kitchen.  We are a part of the Lunches in Schools programme, which is made onsite everyday, and also receive Fruit in school which is available daily to all of our tamariki.

 

​

At Turaki School we also love sport and education outside the classroom and we participate in every local sports event available including all inter-school events,  Mud Run, Ski Club, and Ripper Rugby.  We have two amazingly talented Kapa Haka tutors who guide and prepare our rōpū for a number of festivals including Taiopenga, Mana Ariki and Ruapehu Cultural festivals.

​

Our whanau focussed, student-driven education is unique as we work together to give all of our tamariki opportunities to reach their potential.  

Each week we have “Passion Groups” which provide our students with the opportunity to learn more about one of their passions.  We have a variety of at least 12 options for students to choose from ranging from Robotics and Coding to Vege Gardening, Chess and Baking.
