WELCOME TO ROOM KORIMAKO

Kia Ora whanau
Welcome to Room Korimako, shared this year by Mrs Powers (Mon, Tues) and Whaea Courtnee (Wed, Thurs, Fri).

My name is Kelly-Anne Powers. I was born and raised in Taumarunui and have taught around the area for 30 years. My passion and experience is in junior primary education and I have never stopped learning for myself too. I strongly believe in Learning through Play: it is the perfect context for all kinds of learning- when it is fun and child-led, it is engaging and that is when the learning happens. I love to have our students outdoors and active as much as we can too. I have also followed lots of research around Structured Literacy and I really look forward to new approaches we are taking together in Te Kakano this year..
I am very excited to be offering the Ki Waho programme to Turaki School on Wednesdays again this year too. The junior classes will come and visit my farm for play and an outdoor experience, to grow their personal and social skills and their love and care for the natural world around them.

I’m very happy to be working with Whaea Courtnee this year. She knows these children so well and is so experienced in junior classrooms. We are also excited to welcome Niva Gram, our new Learning Assistant, to our classroom. It's going to be a fun year.

Tēna koutou kātoa- Ko Courtnee Woods tōku ingoa.
I was born and raised in Taumarunui and attended Turaki School throughout my Primary school years. My partner TJ and I have 3 tamariki- Quaylan,  Buck, and Halo who are also tauira of Turaki School.
I have worked at Turaki school for over 3 years as a learning assistant in the junior class rooms- previous to this I was a Teacher Aide at another local primary school for over 8 years. Before my learning assistant role at Turaki, I took a few years off to raise my tamariki. When I returned to work, I was inspired to fulfill my dream of becoming a Kaiako to young tamariki. In 2021 I enrolled at The University of Waikato to study for a Bachelor of Teaching in ECE; this year (2024) I will begin my 3rd and final year of this degree.
I am a passionate Kaiako who is equitable and honest towards our diverse range of tamariki. All tamariki have the right to be supported by a Kaiako who accept them for who they are, and consistently treat them with aroha and manaakitanga. One of my strengths as a Kaiako is building and maintaining positive and reciprocal relationships with tamariki, their Whānau, and other Kaiako. I believe that this is essential for the well being of the tamariki- and in turn, will encourage and support their learning.
I am honored to be teaching your tamariki this year alongside Mrs Powers and Whaea Niva in Room Korimako.
